- "Phishing" is email designed to trick you into believing you are interacting with a legitimate sender, in order to trick you out of passwords, money, or confidential information.
- "Spam" is unsolicited, unwanted, bulk email advertisements from sketchy or sources.
WPS has systems in place to block most spam and phishing, but a small percentage may slip through our filters. If you receive an email that looks like potential spam or phishing, you can report it directly your Gmail inbox. Reporting a message notifies the IT team, who will investigate further*.
*If you have subscribed to a newsletter (Scholastic Magazine, New York Times, etc.), please unsubscribe rather than tagging it as spam. If you tag it as spam, people who want to receive the newsletter may no longer receive it.
Reporting Spam and Phishing from your Gmail Inbox.
- Open the email message so you can read the entire message.
- Click the "three dots" icon on the right-hand side, next to the message's date.
- Choose either "Report spam" or "Report phishing." (Don't worry if you're not sure which one it is, they both report to the same place.)
- Once reported, if the email is still in your inbox, delete it. The IT team will still have a copy for investigation, and will contact you if further steps are needed.
- If have questions about the message, or if you clicked a link that may have compromised your data or computer, you can always also send a ticket request to the Help Desk at [email protected].
